IN 1965, RICHARD N. FRANK created Lawry’s Beef Bowl, the first event of its kind in college football history. In the days preceding each Rose Bowl Game, the Beef Bowl treats the rival teams (each is hosted on a separate evening), their coaches, the Royal Court, Tournament of Roses officials and select media to an evening of prime rib dinners, fun and relaxation at Lawry’s The Prime Rib, Beverly Hills.
Over the years, Lawry’s Beef Bowl has become college football’s most legendary and enduring pre-bowl game tradition, and our sponsor partnership with the Pasadena Tournament of Roses has become the longest-running affiliation of its kind in bowl game history. As we prepare to host the 55th Lawry’s Beef Bowl in December, here are some highlights from Beef Bowls past.
- As each Beef Bowl begins, our Beverly Hills co-workers roll out the red carpet out-side the entrance to the res-taurant and our servers line up to greet the team players as they arrive.
- Penn State coach Joe Paterno celebrated his birthday at the Beef Bowl for the 1995 Rose Bowl.
- Richard N. Frank and Richard R. Frank with Texas Longhorns coach Mack Brown.
- USC’s mascot Tommy Trojan and “Traveler” joined their team at the Beef Bowl for the 1963 Rose Bowl.
